YOU DON’T NEED ANOTHER
COURSE, YOU NEED A PACKAGING PROCESS YOU CAN RELY ON!

You might already feel confident as a designer, but packaging can still leave you unsure about how to structure the process, what happens on the technical side and whether you’re heading in the right direction.

Want to add packaging to your services and build the portfolio work to help you attract more product based clients?

Wish you had experienced feedback while you work so you know what to push, refine or move forward?

Feeling intimidated by dielines, artwork and print production once the design needs to move beyond the mock-up?

Not sure how to structure a packaging project from brief to finished pack without second-guessing every step?

YOUR ROUTE THROUGH THE PACKAGING PLAYGROUND

Six weeks, six clear phases, each one moving your packaging project forward until you’ve built a finished case study ready for your portfolio.

GET SET UP &
READY TO START

RULES OF PLAY

Before you start designing, we’ll get everything in place so you know exactly what you’re working on, which brief you’re taking forward and how you’ll move through the Playground.

WEEK 1

You will:

Choose the packaging brief
you’ll work on for the six weeks
Meet the group and get familiar
with how the Playground works
Break down the brief, spot the key challenge and identify what matters
Map out your project, milestones
and deadlines

EXPLORE YOUR
CREATIVE DIRECTION

THE SANDBOX

This is where the exploration starts. You’ll dig into the category, audience and competitors, gather references and develop at least two creative territories before choosing the direction you want to take forward.

WEEK 2

You will:

Research the category, audience
and competitors
Build a focused bank of visual references
Develop two creative territories
for your brief
Get feedback & choose the
strongest direction to take forward

TURN YOUR PROJECT INTO A CASE STUDY

THE SLIDE

You’ve made it to the end! Now it’s time to bring everything together through mock-ups and storytelling to show the project properly.

WEEK 6

You will:

Create polished mock-ups of your finished packaging
Build a clear story around your
concept and process
Select the work that best shows your thinking and design decisions
Finish with a packaging case study
ready for your portfolio

BUILD YOUR
PACKAGING DESIGN

THE CLIMBING FRAME

Now it’s time to turn your chosen creative direction into an actual brand and packaging concept. You’ll build, test and adjust as you go, working through the messy middle until the idea starts to take shape.

WEEK 3

You will:

Develop your chosen direction
into a brand & packaging concept
Work through hierarchy, layout & shelf impact
Test how the design works across different pack formats or variants
Keep iterating & strengthening the idea as it develops

TEST, REFINE &
PUSH IT FURTHER

THE SEE SAW

This is the back and forth bit. You’ll present your first draft, get feedback, spot what isn’t quite working and keep refining until the design feels stronger, clearer and in a place you're happy with.

WEEK 4

You will:

Present and test your first
packaging draft
Get feedback and identify what
needs pushing further
Refine hierarchy, colour, typography
and graphic details
Make considered decisions about
what stays, changes or goes

GET YOUR DESIGN
READY FOR PRINT

THE HOPSCOTCH

This is the back and forth bit. You’ll present your first draft, get feedback, spot what isn’t quite working and keep refining until the design feels stronger, clearer and in a place you're happy with.

WEEK 5

You will:

Understand how to work with dielines and cutter guides
Set up artwork with the right technical information
Learn the basics of colour, print specs and production
Prepare a final file that reflects how packaging works in the real world

IS THE PACKAGING
PLAYGROUND FOR YOU?

ENTER THE PLAYGROUND

THIS IS NOT FOR YOU IF..

❌  You’re still learning the basics of graphic design, Illustrator or Photoshop

❌  You already confidently take packaging projects from brief through to print and production

❌  You’re looking for something completely self paced

❌  You don’t realistically have capacity to work on the project during the six weeks

You don’t need to arrive knowing everything about packaging, print or production. You just need to be ready to make something, get involved and learn as you go.

THIS IS FOR YOU IF...

✅  You’re already working as a designer and feel confident with your design tools

✅  Packaging is still fairly new to you, even if you’ve done a couple of projects

✅  You want to add packaging to your services and attract more product-based clients

✅  You’d benefit from a clear process from brief through to case study

✅  You’re up for sharing work, giving feedback and joining in with the group

✅  You can realistically set aside at least 4 to 5 hours a week

WHY LEARN PACKAGING
WITH B?

I also love teaching the bits that can feel intimidating when you’re newer to packaging, from understanding the brief and building a clear process to knowing how to prepare a file for print

Most importantly, I’m still doing this work with clients everyday! The process inside Packaging Playground is based on how I genuinely approach projects today, you’re learning how to think through the work in a way you can use again and again.

I’ve been working in branding and packaging for 15+ years, across agencies, in-house teams and freelance projects, so I know the difference between making something look good and making it actually work as packaging.

FAQ's

Do I need packaging experience?
Nope! This could be your very first packaging project or you might have done a couple and still feel like you’re figuring things out as you go. You just need to feel confident working independently in Illustrator and Photoshop.
Do I need to bring my own project?
Nope! You can choose from two briefs I’ve created specifically for the Packaging Playground. But if you already have a project in mind, you can bring that too, I’ll just give the brief a quick check first to make sure it’ll work well for the programme.
How much time should I set aside each week?
I’d recommend setting aside at least 4–5 hours a week, including the two live sessions. Anything beyond that is totally up to you, depending on how far you want to push your project and the level you want to get it to!
How do the live sessions work?
There’ll be two live sessions each week:

Tuesdays, 3–4pm UK: focused co-working and accountability.
Thursdays, 6–7pm UK: live feedback on your work, plus the chance to learn from everyone else’s projects and feedback too.

I’d really encourage you to join both live where possible. If you miss a Tuesday, you’ll have a guided co-working audio to use in your own time. Thursday sessions will be recorded, and you can submit a question beforehand for Loom feedback if you can’t attend.
Will I definitely end up with a portfolio project?
If you complete the deliverables and commit your time to it, yes! That’s the outcome the whole programme is built around. What I can’t promise is that it will win you packaging clients, because that depends on your positioning, marketing and lots of things outside these six weeks!
Will you teach me how to create dielines?
No, and you shouldn’t need to draw them yourself either! I’ll teach you how to interpret and work with supplied dielines, spot potential issues, ask suppliers the right questions and prepare your artwork for print.

I’m a packaging designer, not a structural packaging engineer, so we’ll focus on the things you actually need to know as a designer.
Why isn’t Packaging Playground a course?
Because I wanted it to feel more dynamic and engaging than something you might just watch passively! You’ll be working through a real project alongside the group, with live co-working, feedback, deadlines and support built in.

The short recordings are there to introduce each phase and get you moving, rather than act as pre-recorded classes.
Can I work through Packaging Playground at my own pace?
No, the six phases run alongside the cohort, so you’ll be moving through the project together with set deadlines and live sessions.

You’ll have flexibility around when you do the work each week but it isn’t a self-paced programme.
Why do I need to apply?
Because this is the first time I’m running Packaging Playground and I want to keep the first cohort really small, with just 6 engaged designers who are excited to take part, share their work and get involved!

The application process just helps me make sure it feels like the right fit for everyone.
What happens after I apply?
I’ll review your application and get back to you with the next steps to secure your place.

The first cohort is £500 or 2 payments of £250, and applications close 1st October or earlier once all 6 places are filled!
